Ola boys and girls,

After a few days in Singapore and (unremarkable yet relaxed) Melaka, I am now back in KL, which happened not to be what I expected at all. Basically, while being yet another sprawling Asian megacity, it is mainly a giant business center where futuristic - some of them are literally works(?) of art - shopping malls abound and seemingly outnumber the people. The net result is that the city feels cold and soulless, miles away from vibrant and gritty Bangkok.

However, 'Always look on the bright side of life' said Monty Python, and KL is not all bad : the ridiculously tall Petronas Towers (a scary 463m) did manage to satisfy my passion for skyscrapers, and I also got the chance to sample another one of the local street delicacies, namely the Malay Streetburger ( (c)(tm)(r) Dave). Basically, you wrap the meat in a fried egg, add sweet chili sauce, mayonnaise, ketchup, and lots of green stuff and end up with a fairly filling sandwich that also rips the fabric of space-time tastewise. In other news, islamic architecture can be seen in various places around the city, along with a bird park where mutant tropical ducks from outer space live and a theme park(!) on the seventh floor of one the shopping malls...

Singapore is very, very very peculiar : pristine, immaculate, all skyscrapers, and modern enough to make scifi authors blush. From what I've come to understand, the three main things to do over there are : eat, shop (hence the 'more shops' sign on the picture) and haemorrhage singapore dollars.

I do find Singapore to be quite atypical amongst the many asian cities I have seen so far : whereas these cities are dense, dirty, choking, bedlam-esque, and alive, Singapore is clean, airy, orderly, and feels like one giant uninhabited shopping mall. Since I did not appreciate Singapore that much - I will admit that after getting lost in one of these godforsaken shopping malls I wanted to bang my head against a wall and was hard at work badmouthing the city -, I went back to KL. I am flying the day after tomorrow to Bali where I will meet my mate Aldo :-)
